Wood Floor Sand & refinish FAQs

There are two main types of Hardwood on the market in Utah today. Traditional Solid Tread Hardwood and Engineered Hardwood. They both have different use cases and provided the home with unique options for flooring.

  • Price Varies between products, generally less expensive than engineered hardwood.
  • Has extremely long lifespan when properly maintained.
  • May warp under humid/wet conditions which generally isn’t a problem in Salt Lake City.
  • Generally narrower planks to prevent warping.
  • Product can be sanded and refinished multiple times.
  • Price varies between products, generally more expensive than solid plank hardwood.
  • High resistance to warping due to alternating ply.
  • Wider planks available due to warping resistance.
  • Can be installed as a floating floor, nailed down, or glued down depending on manufacturer.

Ability to be sanded and refinished depends on the thickness of the top layer. Rule of thumb is any veneer over 4 mm can be refinished.
